Phils now own the Wild Card spot, is a win of the Division possible?

The Phillies have found a way to win ballgames in the past couple of series. Yesterday the Phillies played a doubleheader and it was the 2,198th doubleheader in Philadelphia Phillies history. The Phils ended up splitting the day/night doubleheader with the Washington Nationals. Before the start of yesterday’s games, since 7/29/21 (Game 2), the Phillies have won 27 times out of 33 games against the Nationals, which translates to a .818 winning percentage.

A few weeks ago, the Phillies were riding a wave of wins and losses, but that has solidified into a lot of wins lately. The team is currently 62-52, and now 10.5 GB from the Atlanta Braves for first, but they are 3.0 games up in the Wild Card lead at this time. A lot can change between now and the end of the season, I don’t normally start watching the Wild Card until September. But is a run for the division possible by this team? Zack Wheeler is having a great year all of a sudden, with the win yesterday, he is 9-5 with a 3.74 ERA, and he has 155 K’s in 137 innings pitched so far.

The support given to Trea Turner at home by the fans has helped, he’s been doing better lately:

Never say never, we saw a minor miracle in 2007 when the Phillies stormed in to take the NL East from the Mets and this is something that if the Braves stumble, and the Phils do play the Braves 6 more times before the end of the season. Right now the series between the Phillies and the Braves stands at 2-4, while the record for ’23 against the Nationals is now 4-4, the series continues tonight at CBP with a 6:40 PM start, and the Phillies and the Nationals have 3 more games scheduled against one another on the road. One of these games will be played in Williamsport, PA as part of the Little League promotion game.

The Phillies would have to start running the table with wins to win the division and the Braves would have to stumble. The season still has plenty of time for this to happen. A bright spot for the Phillies so far has been their record in inter-league play which is 24-14, usually, it is not that good. The Phils road record is not that good thought, it is 31-30 so far with plenty of games left on the road, so they will have to turn this around on the road and start winning ballgames if a run for the division were to happen.

Nick Castellanos continues to have a great year for the Phillies, he went 3-9 in the doubleheader and has 17 HRs and 67 RBI and a .768 OPS so far.
