Can’t build on winning, Phils drop the first game vs DBacks

The Phillies again got sloppy in the field last night, unfortunately, it led to a few runs in the 2nd inning, as the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona was up 1-0 when an error by Bryson Stott at 2nd base led to a combination of hits by the Dbacks that took them to a 3-0 lead. The 6-3 loss put the Phils back to 3 games under .500 but interestingly enough, they were 3 games under .500 in 2022 on this date.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. extended his hitting streak to 15-games with 4 hits last night for the Diamondbacks, here with a 1st inning home run.

In the post-game show the announcers, Michael Barkann and Ricky Bottalico, lamented about this year’s Phillies’ defense that we’ve seen so far this year. With the win, the Diamondbacks move to 28-20 on the year.

The Phillies did show some offense though with a Kyle Schwarber home run and a Bryson Stott home run to claw back into the game by a 3-2 score in the 4th inning. The two solo home runs were great, but the Phils couldn’t catch up to the Diamondbacks, as Pavin Smith hit a home run (his 4th of the year) into the 2nd deck to make it 4-2 in the 5th, and the Dbacks never looked back.

Zack Wheeler took the loss last night, he is 3-4 on the year. Zack’s line was 6.0 IP, 3 ER, and 3 K with 1 BB. The Phillies have lost 6 of the last 8 games.

The series continues tonight at Citizens Bank Park, with Ryne Nelson taking on Matt Strahm at 6:40 PM EDT
