The Phillies have 7-days until MLB’s Opening Day, which is March 30, 2023, a day that sees all 30 MLB teams starting off their season. The latest news that Phillies starter Ranger Suarez is not going to be healthy for the opening has hit the Phillies hard. On top of this, Andrew Painter was expected to possibly make the rotation, but he too has suffered an injury to keep him from the Opening Day roster. Can the other Phillies pitchers step up and fill the role if Suarez is not going to make the roster on Opening Day?
Embed from Getty ImagesAlec Bohm is expected to continue to do well this year, as of this morning has had the most at-bats of all Phillies players. He has batted 4 HR and 8 RBI on the Grapefruit League schedule so far. We will see if he continues to mature into a superstar type of player. Rhys Hoskins has a lot riding on this season, if he doesn’t stay with the Phillies he will be playing for a contract elsewhere. Despite small setbacks on defense though, Hoskins contributed very well to the Phillies’ offense. I can remember the days in the MLB when 30 HRs were something to be very proud of, though very few Phillies fans seem to hold much high esteem to Hoskins.
Darick Hall has seen a lot of ABs this Grapefruit League as well, currently, he is 2nd behind Bohm with ABs. Hall has actually been doing very well, he has 5 HR and 11 RBI, arguably he should be on the Phillies bench for sure. We’ll see what happens for Opening Day. Leading the Phillies in RBIs in Spring Training has been Jake Cave so far, playing left field for the Phils.
The final week of Spring Training starts today, we should start to see a team that is close to it’s Opening Day-type of caliber as the focus will shift to the regular season real soon for this Phillies team. Incidentally, they are -350 to win the NL East in Vegas with a week to go until Opening Day.
