Phils look flat in Miami overall

A lot of Phillies fans are continuously scratching their heads when the Phillies play the Marlins. This weekend was no exception. The Marlins manhandled the Phillies and took 3 of 4 games from them in this series. Sunday’s game was an embarrassment with the fish getting an 11-3 thumping of the Phils – even hitting Phillies ace, Zack Wheeler, and left him with a 9.39 ERA after the 8 H and 7 ER he gave up to them. Wheeler is now 0-2 on the season.

This isn’t the first time that this has happened to the Phils when they play the Marlins, I was surprised to read that the Marlins have actually won the season series vs the Phils in the past three seasons (including the shortened Covid-19 season in 2020). At this point, it seems there is no real explanation for it, every season there are different mix-ups of players for each team, but still, this Marlins team has been a thorn in the side of the Phillies.

I know the season is early, and we’re not even a month into the games that count now, but this shouldn’t be happening to a team like the Phillies this year. They have a team that should be getting the job done with an explosive offense but so far, we’ve seen that offense very sparingly.

Maybe the Phils have to approach the game as the Marlins do, and just go out there are play all out and see what happens. It just so happens the Phils may do that, but it isn’t working. Something is very wrong when in each of the last 3 seasons a subpar team like the Marlins is whipping up on the Phils. There has to be some explanation for it.

Just this morning while watching the recap of yesterday’s games, a statistic caught my eye. The Baltimore Orioles seem to play the Yankees just as tough. The O’s blanked the Yankees 5-0 yesterday in Baltimore. Yes, the Baltimore Orioles took a series from the mighty Yankees, with Aaron Judge, Josh Donaldson, and Giancarlo Stanton playing yesterday. The Yankees are a powerhouse but their last World Series win came at the expense of the Phillies in 2009, and the Phils won it all in 2008. The Orioles usually always give the Yankees a toughly played game. I am going to look more into this rivalry and have some more interesting facts to write about as time goes on.

This morning on sports talk radio 94.1 – the talk is should the Phillies fire Joe Girardi, if you follow my Twitter feed @fightinphillies, I tweeted out about this, I got the latest updated odds from Las Vegas that had Girardi among the top 3 managers in the MLB to possibly be fired. Do I think this will happen to Joe G.? No, unless of course the Phils sink to the bottom of the NL East by Memorial Day and they keep playing inconsistently. Even then it would be difficult to think that Girardi would be cut loose, but you never know, baseball can be very strange sometimes.
