We have our MV3 – but outside of Philly fans may disagree

Well, the announcement last night of Bryce Harper being voted MVP was music to the ears of Phillies fans everywhere. Three years into his contract with the Phils, Bryce brought home a coveted MVP title to himself and the Phillies team. It’s been 14 long years since Jimmy Rollins was voted MVP in 2007, that was the last time a Phillie won the title prior to last night.

A lot of fans outside of the Phillies fandom though had a much different take on things. “I don’t think he was an MVP,” was a common response from many a baseball fan that didn’t think Bryce Harper was of MVP caliber this past season. That’s not a knock on Bryce per se, but it is a knock against the BBWAA who obviously felt differently. The writers watch a lot of baseball, a lot of players, and tons of games, unlike these fans who may be griping because they don’t really have an overall exposure to the game like the writers do. They are entitled to their opinions though and nothing changes the fact that Harper is indeed the MVP of the NL.

And like the Cy Young Award is so close in terms of interpreting different stats and what it took to be the ‘Cy Young Award winner’ – you could have made the case for other players that may have had better numbers in certain criteria. The same holds true for the MVP award, different stats can be brought up and made a case for why a certain player should be MVP.

Bryce was the 6th player in Phillies history to have the honor of being elected to be MVP, it is the 8th time a Phillies player won it, with Mike Schmidt taking the title 3 times himself, in 1980, 1981, and 1986. So it is a rare honor for the Phillies to have the MVP on the team. It is the 2nd time Bryce won the MVP, the first coming in 2015 for him.
