Phils pick up a win in the Windy City

The Phils didn’t need it but poured on some rare late power in the late innings of the ballgame last night in Chicago, taking a 13-3 victory on game 1 of the series with the Cubs. It was a night of upsets in the MLB, the Dodgers losing to the Marlins, and the Giants losing to the Cardinals at home in the City by the bay.

Phillies starter, Matt “Matty Moe” Moore, was pulled after 4.0 innings last night so he couldn’t have earned the win, it was 2-2 at the time, the Phils went ahead in the 6th inning, going ahead 4-2, then added the 9 total runs in the 8th and the 9th inning.

37,165 fans were watching baseball last night at Wrigley to see this game against the Phils, who were promptly beaten on Sunday 11-1 against the Padres at home. So this win was a welcome bounce back for the team. The win takes the Phillies to 2 games under .500 at 40-42 on the year. The Cubs have a very similar record, 42-43 heading into tonight’s 8:05 PM local Philadelphia time start.

The Phillies smacked 5 HR’s on the night to seal the victory. The Phillies dismantled the Cubs bullpen as Odubel Herrera went long, Knapp, Gregorious, Hoskins, and Bohm all had dingers for the Phils last night. Bryce Harper was 1-3 and currently has a .267 BA on the year.

Cubs manager, David Ross, was ejected from the game last night. He was ejected on a disputed balls and strikes call by the umpire when the game was tied at 2-2. The pitch was clearly low – even the replay with the strike zone box revealed that it was a ball.

If the MLB is so concerned about social issues and ‘doing the right thing’ as they have been associating themselves with or so they say. Shouldn’t they be talking about how dangerous it is in Chicago? Over the holiday weekend, over 100 shot and 19 killed? Maybe move the game from Chicago? Just a thought.
