The Phillies will face the NL East leading Mets all weekend, as they kick off the weekend with a good old fashioned double header to start with 4-game series. The Mets have been holding their lead in the division, and if the Phillies are going to make a run at them, there would be no better time to do it then now.
The Phillies have slipped to a 3 games under .500 mark with the terrible play of the past week. The are 5 GB in the NL East now, and the Atlanta Braves have passed by them and occupy 2nd place. Phils are losers of the last 3 straight and only 1 win in the last 5 games, turning in a 4-6 record in the last 10 games.
Going in Game 1 for the Phils is Aaron Nola, he brings his 5-4 record with a 4.22 ERA into the game against Taijuan Walker who has a 6-3 record with a 2.42 ERA so the advantage is tipping in the Mets favor in the pitching matchup.
Nola has been getting a mix of good and bad so far this year, gets a lot of strikeouts then giving up some monster home runs. We’ll see if he can be counted on to go out there and give the Phils a good chance to win Game 1 of this series.
The 13-12 loss in the last game the Phils played against Washington was a real battle and it’s a battle that the Phillies shouldn’t have lost. No excuses, no rationalizing at all, this should have been a Phillies win. Shoulda, coulda, but didn’t. I hope this isn’t the way the Phillies season goes.
We continue to see the glaring difficulties that this team has had though this season. Bullpen pitching, and then some trouble with starting pitching occasionally has saw this team end up with the record that it has. We’ve seen it play out for a long time too with this Phillies team on a year after year basis. Can anyone solve this? I was thinking Dave Dombrowski could be the one, but we see it all happening again before our eyes.
