.@JArrieta34– last 2 starts common theme? Gave up 3 homers last start. Better at that today. Was walks today.— Michael Barkann (@MBarkannNBCS) May 16, 2019
.@JArrieta34– Couple things I could have done better. 2 or 3 runs that scored were because of walks. Could have been a closer ballgame. Didn’t necessarily do my job tonight.— Michael Barkann (@MBarkannNBCS) May 16, 2019
.@JArrieta34 coming up from the clubhouse on the decline in his performance over the past 4 starts(since calling out the team after the loss at @Mets on 4/22). On @NBCSPhilly right now.— Michael Barkann (@MBarkannNBCS) May 16, 2019
Jake Arrieta.. after the Phillies loss to the Mets April 22, 2019
When Jake Arrieta called out the Phillies in a loss after the April 22nd game in New York, it was an eye opener, rarely does a pitcher go out of his way to call out a team following a loss. It does happen, but it’s very rare. After I heard Jake do this, I thought to myself, he’s probably going to jinx himself in saying it’s the team not doing well, not necessarily critiquing his pitching as harshly. Now take the comments into context, Bryce Harper was steamed at the home plate umpire, got ejected out of the game against the Mets. Gabe Kapler was steamed, probably the most upset we’ve seen him in a Phillies manager’s uniform, and the game had a rain delay. So it wasn’t a typical game, and Arrieta’s remarks weren’t typical either.

Bruce Willlis stopped by yesterday for the ceremonial first pitch and took some BP too!
It seems like Jake Arrieta has done just that, he jinxed himself, because after making those statements to the press on April 22nd, he hasn’t been that good himself. Yes, he’s a veteran pitcher, is he a Cliff Lee? No, not at all, or even close. He’s earned respect with the time and accomplishments he’s made in the game, is he a dominant pitcher? No really either, he’s given up the long ball and have walked a lot of batters.

The Phillies lost last night to the Brewers, again it was a team loss. Not really all of Arrieta’s fault, the bats sort of went silent. So the Phils and the Brewers will wrap up their 4-game series this afternoon in Philly at 1:05PM and will aim to salvage this series with a tie if they win.
