Barney beats the Phillies by himself

JP Arencibia provides some offense for this Phillies team yesterday in the opener

Darwin Barney, not exactly a household name, may want to frame the boxscore of yesterday’s opening Spring Training game against the Phillies. Barney agreed to a one year deal with the Blue Jays for $1.05M for this season, I think the Blue Jays may have made a good signing. Darwin went 3-3 at the plate and drove in all 5 runs for the Jays for the win.

Highlights for the Phillies were few on this first game of Spring Training. Aaron Altherr made a good throw to the plate to get a runner out and prevent a 6th run on the day from being scored against the Phils. J.P. Arencibia had a HR for the Phils, and went 2-3 on the day with 2 RBI

Carlos Ruiz, longtime Phillies catcher who the Phillies look very intent on replacing, hit a 2 RBI single. Matt Stairs, Phillies TV commentator, said he likes the way Ruiz is standing in the batter’s box, and that’s he’s ‘driving the ball’.

Too early to comment too much more on this game. There needs to be a spark on this team, there was talk about who would step up to be a leader as well. The fire has to be there, the fire of desire to win as well.

Phillies team President, Andy MacPhail, said that he’s looking for some extra hustle out there on the field for Spring Training. “We have a lot of young players, and we’re excited about their future,” is what MacPhail said when asked about the ’16 season.

We’ll see what happens today as the Phils face the Jays again in their home park.
