Phillies player numbers over the years

One of my favorite associations with baseball is the numbers that some of the players have worn over the years, specifically Phillies players. Over at Baseball-Reference.com you can scroll to the bottom of their main page and look for the ‘Frivolities’ section, under that heading you’ll find “Uniform Number Tracker” which will then tell you quite a bit about what numbers different players have worn.

No player will wear Lefty’s number 32 again for the Phillies

We all know we won’t see any future players wearing the following numbers for the Phillies. 20 being retired for Mike Schmidt, 32 retired for Steve Carlton, 1 retired for Richie Ashburn, 36 for Robin Roberts, and 14 for Jim Bunning which the Phillies retired in 2001. But what about the numbers of other players?

Quick can you remember Ted Sizemore, Richie Hebner? How about Bake McBride? Do you remember what numbers they wore for the Phillies? Well, you can always look that up on the individual player’s page on BR too. But say you wanted to know every player that wore # 5 for the Phils? Here’s a list that goes back to 1969 (and before) at the click of a button:

Did you know that Ryan Howard didn’t start off with the number 6 jersey for the Phillies? He originally had the number 12 jersey, then switched over to the number 6 the next season.

We remember Larry Bowa wearing the number 10 for what seemed to be forever in his 1970-81 career with the Phils, then Darren Daulton curated the number 10 for a long time from 1983-1997, but now it’s another superstar who wore the same number last year, JT Realmuto.
