Vargas finally gets a win in Phils uniform on 10th start

The Phillies won last night in Cleveland, by a score of 9-4, Jason Vargas picked up his first win as a Phillie. The season is winding down fast, as there is only 9 more games left in the baseball season now, with one in Cleveland tonight, 5 games vs. Washington and another 3 against the Marlins. It was the 4th time the Phillies won the game in the 10th overall start by Vargas as a Phillie, his record is 1-3 as a Phils player.

JT Realmuto is the Phillies ‘go to’ player in 2019, he’s really been good for this team

The curtain is coming to a close on this 2019 team, here’s how the standings look as the Phils are still in 4th place in the division:

The elimination number for the Phillies is down to 4 – not much room for error, though at this time, the playoff chance is less than 1 percent. What more can be said about this team, it’s an average ballclub that couldn’t get on a roll because they weren’t that good. Just like Vargas, he kept the Phils in several ballgames by getting deeper into the games, but isn’t that good.

Here’s the NL as a whole so far:

Early looks at the statistics of the team overall as compared to other NL teams, the Phillies really did poorly in the pitching department overall – finishing 14th out of 15 teams in giving up HRs and 13th in strikeouts, so the Phillies pitchers got hit badly this year, the team is 11th out of 15 teams in ERA with 9 games to go.

If you’re more than a casual fan, this season was a bust for the team. After getting off to good starts both years in the last two seasons with this team, it just fell apart for one reason or another. All the excuses in the world don’t explain it, but numbers point at some deficiencies. Poor pitching is one of them, you can’t have a good team with this poor of a pitching staff.

Some pitching stats for the Phils with only 9 games left in the season:
