The Phillies have an off day in the schedule tonight, but the Draft for 2016 takes place up in the MLB Network studios with the first 77 draft picks being televised. Coverage starts at 6 p.m. on MLB Network.
The Phillies have the first pick in the draft, and it’s only the second time in club history that they’ve had that honor. The first time they had the first pick, back in 1998, the team selected Pat Burrell as the number 1 player, Pat went on to have a great career with the Phillies.
Who are they going to pick this year? There are many different opinions on this, Jason Groome from South Jersey is the top prospect, but the Phillies may not need to draft a pitcher. Groome is also still in high school, he may attend college if everything doesn’t go exactly to his liking. He will even not be at the MLB Studios in person, he chose to stay home and watch the draft on TV. If you’re the number 1 prospect, I would think he should have been up there in person and be glad that he is the overall number 1 prospect.
We’ll only know for sure when the Phillies go on the clock shortly after 7 p.m. and then announce their pick. I don’t think it’s going to be Groome, the Phillies sort of have a lot of pitching at the moment.
