The Phillies are flat in the last 10 games and need to improve fast to keep the good things that have already happened for this team in place
One of the Phillies top players for so many years, Ryan Howard has really slipped down to new depths this season and manager, Pete Mackanin has finally had enough. Mackanin told Ryan Howard yesterday that he would be sitting him for about 5 days. Mackanin reasoned that perhaps Howard can get a fresh sense of what he should be doing out on the field.
Ryan Howard has been in a decline for a few years now, he 36 years old though, and that’s when a lot of players like Howard really start to peak. It all seemed to start happening for him in 2012 and then 2013 when he was injured and not able to play. In the 2014 season, he was back to full good health and put in a 153 game season with numbers that were really good at 23 HRs and 95 RBI but we remembered the guy who did more for this team. He can no longer carry a team on his back like he did from 2006-2009 when the RBIs flowed like water.
This Phillies team has been rebuilding for too long now. Yes, it started a few years ago with other management in place, the rebuild was extremely slow to get off the ground. This year has been a bit of a surprise except for the past few weeks. Suddenly, we saw what appeared to be a rejuvenated Phillies team that found a way to win. Those wins are now becoming a distant memory. For the first time in a long time (last time was April 24), the Phillies have slipped to under .500 with their 26-27 record with last night’s loss.
The Milwaukee Brewers come to town tonight with the Phillies really needing a win to snap this 6-game losing streak. Adam Morgan is getting close to earning a trip down to AAA, his ERA is bloated at 7.07 and he gave up 6 ER last night. At this point, Alec Asher could be getting a call to come back up to the Phillies club as he’s been doing well in AAA with a 1.53 ERA and a 3-0 record ( He is on a 7 day DL as of right now though). We’ll see if and when that happens sometime soon, but Morgan looks like he isn’t doing too well right now at the major league level.
This team desperately needs some offense. It’s time to act now, and keep what this team has already done in tact before all of that is lost. Can management get a bat in this lineup that will shake up this team with some enthusiasm?
