This afternoon, the Phillies will face a pitcher on the mound for the Nats that is believed to be the ace of the team. This pitcher was the first overall pick in the 2009 MLB draft and immediately a sense of hype developed around him. Stephen Strasburg will take the mound for the Washington Nationals today.
Is Stephen Strasburg living up to all of the hype that surrounded him when the Nationals brought him up to the bigs a couple of years ago?
In five seasons so far with the Nationals, Strasburg has a 36-28 record. This season, Strasburg has struggled with a 7-9 record with a 3.55 ERA in 23 games so far.
In 2012, Strasburg was his best so far of his career, 15-6 with a 3.16 ERA. That season was the year after the surgery that he needed to repair the torn ligament in his pitching arm, known as Tommy John surgery.
The injury happened to Strasburg when he was on the mound in Philadelphia, pitching in a game against the Phillies on August 21, 2010 when after he threw a pitch, he kind of reacted like he knew something was really wrong. It reminded me of seeing Cliff Lee do the same thing on the mound the other night.
Here’s some more of Strasburg’s career numbers:
